From the Secretary-General,
ITU |
The Asian and Pacific region encompasses a vast geographical expanse,
the largest in terms of both size and population. Satellite coverage
is the answer to meet the diverse communication needs of its inhabitants,
and the fledgling industry must be nurtured to fulfill its great
potential.
I commend the work of the Asia-Pacific Satellite Communications
Council since its inception in 1994 in promoting satellite technologies
and expanding digital opportunities across the region. A non-profit
organization, APSCC represents a range of space-related industries,
government agencies as well as academic and research entities in
Asia and the Pacific. It has nurtured a breadth of outer space communications
activities, including satellite broadcasting, and helped develop
the socio-economic and cultural objectives of the region.
I am certain APSCC will continue to promote international cooperation
among satellite operators, service providers and government regulators
in the Asia-Pacific region and encourage the development of new
products, technologies and services.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has been at the
forefront of radio communications for over 140 years and has been
instrumental in facilitating global satellite communications. The
Union plays a vital role in the management of the radio-frequency
spectrum and satellite orbits —finite natural resources which are
increasingly in demand from a large number of services such as fixed,
mobile, broadcasting, space research, meteorology, global positioning
systems, environmental monitoring and, last but not least, communication
services that ensure safety of life on land, at sea and in the skies.
We need to work together and build partnerships to bring the benefits
of satellite communications to all inhabitants in the Asian and
Pacific region — in bustling cities, in remote mountain fastnesses,
in barren deserts, and in small island developing states. Reliable
and affordable communications is critical for achieving our development
goals and for building a people-centered information society.
