4 Satellite news
A round-up of the latest news.

FEATURES
10 A satellite paradise
When most of us think of Bermuda, we would usually picture an island
paradise with a subtropical climate and pink sand but there is a
lot more to Bermuda than meets the eye including a thriving base
for the satellite industry. Helen Jameson finds out more and also
speaks to Bermuda’s Minister for Energy, Telecommunications
and E-Commerce, the Hon. Terry Lister, J.P., M.P.

16 A tough solution for a tough job
The oil and gas environment is a tough one. High winds, rough seas,
inclement weather mean that communications need to be as robust
as possible. Helen Jameson looks into the antenna systems that can
withstand this hostile environment to deliver communications 24
hours a day, seven days a week.

22 A common aim
As technology moves on and the communication industry changes and
evolves, more and more companies are looking towards satellite as
a complement to terrestrial networks. Helen Jameson finds out more.

30 By the industry, for the industry
One of Europe’s leading broadcast shows is back again. IBC
provides the perfect forum for the broadcast industry and the opportunity
for showcasing, networking and gaining new contacts. Satellite Evolution
previews the show.

38 The ultimate flight experience
We will soon be able to cope with those dreaded long haul flights
thanks to an innovation by Panasonic Avionics called eXConnect.
This system will enable passengers to access all the same communications
services as they would on the ground. Helen Jameson finds out more
about this exciting development.

44 The Mobile TV tipping point
By this time next year, Mobile TV will have truly arrived in Europe
with established mobile companies such as T-Mobile and 3 already
offering services and Dublin-based Solaris Mobile launching in Q1
of next year. The question is, are all the pieces in place to make
mobile TV a success in the region? Helen Jameson investigates further.

50 Satellite: pushing up profits
The scope for satellite in the retail and banking sectors is enormous.
In terms of retail, satellite can maximise the big stores’
profits and help create profits for farmers or entrepreneurs in
small rural communities. In banking, satellite will enable those
farmers to manage the money they earn regardless of how remotely
located they are, to enabling large retail firms to give their customers
access to payments methods wherever they are. These are just examples.
There are a plethora of reasons to use satellite within the banking
and retail sectors.
