Antenova introduces REFLECTOR - a new family of antennas that are resistant to de-tuning - for smart
Antenova Ltd, manufacturer of antennas and RF antenna modules for M2M and the Internet of Things, is to introduce a new range of low profile antennas with resistance to de-tuning at Embedded World. The new antennas are branded REFLECTOR, and are designed to operate on any surface including metal, without re-tuning. They can be used on metal surfaces, such as smart meters, or they can be attached to bicycle frames or light fittings, in smart city applications.
Antenova will show the first REFLECTOR antennas at Embedded World, along with the company’s full selection of embedded antennas and RF modules for ISM, Wi-Fi, GSM, 3G, 4G/LTE, NB-IoT and GNSS.
Antennas are usually positioned away from metal surfaces to prevent reflections and de-tuning, but the REFLECTOR antennas use a new technology which Antenova has patented which maintains the performance of the RF signal when the antenna is mounted on a metal surface.
Antenova’s Director of Antenna Applications, Chris Tomlin, who developed the new design, explains how this was achieved: “The REFLECTOR antennas are formed of two layers, one electrically isolated from the other, so as to provide RF shielding to the second layer. This means that the antenna can perform as well on a metal surface as it can on any other surface, or in free space.”
The REFLECTOR antennas also have a very low profile - the first antenna to be released measures only 32 x 16 x 1.6mm, which means they can be used in small space efficient designs.
The shape of the REFLECTOR antennas is similar to Antenova’s flexiiANT range, except that they are manufactured from ridged FR4, and the important difference that they can be fixed to metal surfaces. It is this design feature that makes the REFLECTOR antennas ideal for smart meters, connected light fittings, and for tracking metal objects such as bicycles.
