#SantamHackathon : IoT Safety Hackathon

For the second consecutive year, the South African Innovation Summit (SAIS) has partnered with Santam Limited and IBM South Africa, to offer the South-African hacking community an opportunity to get involved in the country's biggest safety hackathon. This 48-hour IoT Safety Hackathon, brings together a diverse group of people with a wide range of skill-sets to collaborate in improving the safety of the personal lives of South Africans. The hackathon will take place on 6 and 7 September as part of the 2017 SA Innovation Summit at the Cape Town Stadium. #SantamHackathon 2017 is an exciting highlight on Cape Town’s tech and innovation calendar. It aims to create innovative tools to ensure a safer, more efficient lifestyle for ordinary South Africans. Says Mokaedi Dilotsotlhe, Santam’s Executive head of Brand and Marketing: “This hackathon forms part of a long term commitment made by Santam to guide South Africans through the world of risk and keep themselves and their possessions safe. It is also aligned to our current Safety ideas campaign (www.santam.co.za/safetyideas).” Dr Audrey Verhaeghe, Chairman of the SA Innovation Summit concurs: “The SA Innovation Summit is looking forward to the solutions that will be borne at the 2017 #Santamhackathon. This event supports the Summit’s goal to create an enabling environment for the Tech Entrepreneur, by connecting cross cutting technologies, coders and enabling organisations, through discussions, visualisation, education, research and events. IoT is revolutionising how we look at our networks, efficiency, productivity and safety, and events like these have the potential to profit both the local and global economy.” IBM shall be running workshops in their Bluemix Cloud infrastructure in the weeks before the hackathon to equip hackers for the task ahead. Bluemix offers services ranging from data analysis to machine learning and there will be mentors and facilitators during the #Santamhackathon to support teams with development and accelerate the creative process. Free pre-event workshops will take place on 24 August & 3 September 5PM - 9PM for Session 1, and 25 August & 4 September 5PM- 9PM for Session 2. The public and all participants are invited to attend the 2017 #Santamhackathon launch event, hosted at 18h00 on Tuesday, 5 September at the Cape Town Stadium. The launch function will feature relevant talks by experts as well as offering an opportunity to developers, engineers, creatives and other change-makers in this field, to network, learn and exchange ideas. With limited seating available at this FREE event, all interested parties are encouraged to sign up early at http://qkt.io/WwLEIL. The winning team will receive a R20 000 cash prize, an opportunity to be one of the Santam Safety Ideas Top 10 finalists who get incubation support (worth R150 000) to guide their idea from ideation to concept, prototype and eventually business plan and readiness to launch. Second and third prizes worth R10 000 and R5 000 will also be awarded. In 2016, Santam’s Safety Campaign gathered over 200 unique ideas! Top 10 finalists were eventually chosen, and after a series of pitches and countdown, four finalists were invited to pitch their final business plans and investment requirements in August 2016. Concepts from the four finalists included a low cost alarm system suited for communities not served by traditional armed responses; a wearable device providing tracking capabilities for large events and communities; a telematics business model providing a platform for consumers to select who to give access to their data; and finally, a social awareness project using electronic stakes to highlight high accident zones with the aim of influencing driving behaviour (www.santam.co.za/safetyideas). Dilotsotlhe confirmed the value of this event: “The partnership with SAIS and IBM is important to us as it reinforces our focus on safety and ensures that we collaborate with society to come up with even better innovations to continuously improve on what we do.”
