The Coalition for Deep Space Exploration (Coalition) congratulates Brigadier General Wayne Monteith for his appointment by U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao to serve as the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) next Associate Administrator for Commercial Space Transportation (AST).
“The Coalition welcomes General Monteith to this important role and looks forward to working closely with him on critical space access issues,” said Dr. Mary Lynne Dittmar, President and CEO of the Coalition. “General Monteith is a respected leader in the space community and brings vast experience to the table. The Coalition is looking forward to engaging with him and the FAA AST team to continue to advance the U.S. launch industry while ensuring both public safety and critical reliability in U.S. access to space.”
General Monteith will leave the Air Force on December 1 and will assume his new role at FAA on January 20. He succeeds George Nield, who retired from the head of FAA AST in March 2018. Gen. Monteith has extensive experience with the space industry, and the launch business in particular, having served as commander of the 45th Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida, from August 2015 to August 2018. In this role, he oversaw over 15,000 military, civilian employees, and contractors as they operated the Eastern Range, which supports all launch activities from Cape Canaveral. Previous assignments also included commanding the 50th Space Wing at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado from August 2009 to August 2011 and serving as Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon from June 2014 to July 2015. His military career began in 1989.
